Experienced and well skilled, with a vibrant presence of sound best describes Alex Richardson's vocal artistry. As a former Fellow at the Tanglewood Institute, Mr. Richardson sang the role of Vogelgesang in Act III of Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg under the baton of Maestro James Levine and also performed solos in Stravinsky's Pulcinella with Maestro Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos. He has sung the roles of Alfred in Die Fledermaus with Opera Southwest and Will Tweedy in Carlisle Floyd's Cold Sassy Tree with Amarillo Opera. He also made his European debut singing Alfredo in La Traviata with Festival Lyrique-en-mer/Festival de Belle-Île, France. Included among his roles performed are Fenton in Falstaff, Camille in The Merry Widow, Rodolfo in La Bohème and the title role in Albert Herring. In the 2009-10 season, Mr. Richardson returned to the Festival de Belle-Île to make his role debut as the Duke in Rigoletto. He sang Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi with Amarillo Opera, and Brettschneider and the Psychologist in The Good Solider Schweik with Long Beach Opera. Mr. Richardson was also the tenor soloist in the Verdi Requiem in Las Cruces, NM and Cypress, CA, and was presented in recital by Trinity Wall Street Concerts at One Series. Mr. Richardson debuted with Toledo Opera in the role of Scaramuccio in Ariadne auf Naxos, then made his role debut of Werther in Denton, Texas. He was also presented in concerts this winter with DiCapo Opera in Boca Raton, FL and then sang the Evangelist in the Bach Johannespassion in Jacksonville, FL. Mr. Richardson debuted the role of the Soldier Ruiz Alonzo in Osvaldo Golijov's opera Ainadamar at Santa Fe Opera directed by Peter Sellars. He subsequently performed the role of the Bullfighter in Ainadamar making his debut with the Atlanta Symphony in Atlanta's Woodruff Arts Center and at the Ojai and Ravinia Festivals. He later made his debut in the same role with the Chicago Symphony at Chicago's Symphony Hall. Upcoming Engagements Upcoming in 2011 for Mr. Richardson is the role of Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi at the Northern Lights Music Festival in Minnesota, the role of Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca at Opera Western Reserve, and the role of Count Vaudemont in Tchaikovsky's Iolanta at Dicapo Opera Theater in New York. In the Spring of 2012 Mr. Richardson will be covering the role of Andre in the American premiere of Rufus Wainwright's Prima Donna at New York City Opera, and then will cover the title role in Werther at Washington National Opera. Concert and Recital Engagements As a roster member of the Marilyn Horne Foundation, Mr. Richardson has sung on the recital series On Wings of Song and under their auspices has completed residencies and recitals in towns throughout America. He has appeared in several concert venues throughout the New York area including Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, the 92nd Street Y, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Trinity Church and the Austrian Cultural Forum. Honors and Awards Mr. Richardson was awarded the First Place prize in the Laureen Butler Competition of the El Paso Opera and was named a regional prize winner for the Metropolitan Opera Council Auditions for the Northeast and Rocky Mountain regions. He recently received an Encouragement Award from the Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation. Conductors and Directors Mr. Richardson has sung under the baton of Maestri James Levine, Alan Gilbert, Robert Spano, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Arkady Leytush, Kenneth Montgomery, John Morris Russell, Erik Nielsen, John Baril, John Moriarty, Philip Walsh, Laurence Renes, David Gilbert, Robert Spillman and Martin Isepp. Directors include Peter Sellars, Michael Scarola, Stefano Vizioli, Douglas Fitch, Mark Medoff, Ned Canty, Ken Cazan, Richard Cowan, Gordon Ostrowsky, Linda Brovsky and Kuniaki Hata. Education Originally from Las Cruces, New Mexico, Alex Richardson holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He also he received his Master of Music degree from Manhattan School of Music, after which he became a Studio Artist at Central City Opera. Following his training there he was invited to apprentice at The Santa Fe Opera for two seasons. |
